The governor of Bizerte, Salem Ben Yacoub, called for accelerating the work to enhance and protect the Bizerte coastline against marine erosion, with an emphasis on developing the protective wall, quays and decorative lighting to enhance the aesthetics and functionality of the site.
During a site visit on Wednesday, in the presence of Mehdi Belhaj, Director General in charge of managing the Coastal Protection and Development Agency, the governor commended the progress of the work and the commitment of all parties to completing the project as quickly as possible. He emphasized the national, regional, and local importance of the project, which aims to strengthen infrastructure, boost economic and tourism activity, and preserve the marine environment.
The governor also recommended continuing to strengthen communication with all civil society actors, considered essential partners in monitoring and supporting the State’s efforts.
According to Mehdi Belhaj, the overall budget for the project is estimated at 100 million dinars, of which 40 million are allocated to the first phase which is currently underway.
The visit took place in the presence of the Secretary General of the Governorate, Abdelatif Hamid, the delegate of Bizerte North, Samia Bouallag, the head of the regional directorate of the Coastal Protection and Development Agency, Maher Khacharem, as well as the companies and the control office in charge of the project.
The works, which began in September 2025, cover a distance of 7 kilometers and include the construction of three rock groynes, the artificial replenishment of approximately one million cubic meters of sand dredged from the seabed, the development of a 600-meter stretch of coastline, the installation of windbreaks, the stabilization of sand dunes, and other technical interventions aimed at enhancing the site and protecting the coastline and marine environment. This project is the first of its kind in Tunisia and the region.
