Officials from the Ministry of Communication Technologies and representatives of the private mobile telephone operator Ooredoo Tunisia, gave the kick-off, Wednesday March 6, in the locality of Ain Meriem in Bizerte, to the start-up of the Ifriqiya submarine cable.
Ifriqiya, with a capacity of 200 Gbt, launched from the connection point in Bizerte, is connected to the main line between Marseille in France and Abou Talaat in Egypt over a length of 950 km, offering a large capacity of approximately 3 TB/s (Tera bits per second).
The head of the cabinet of the Minister of Communication Technologies, Kamel Saadaoui, specified in a statement to TAP that this new achievement is part of the State strategy and represents one of the priorities in the field of development. of the basic infrastructure of telecommunications networks as well as an ideal infrastructure for the launch of the 5th generation (5G) service.
Tunisia has chosen the diversification of operators given the high cost of this type of infrastructure in addition to the concern to overcome any problem that may arise, noted the same source, recalling that operators are called upon to invest in cables under -marine due to the country’s identified need estimated at nearly 6 or 7 submarine cables.
The executive director of Ooredoo, Mansoor Rachid Al-Khater, for his part stressed that the Ifriqiya cable project is among the strategic projects launched by Ooredoo to connect the northern Tunisian coasts of the city of Bizerte to the city of Marseille in France , in a record time.
Ifriqiya is one of the important projects in the field of digital strategy and an investment attraction point for large companies operating in this field, thanks to high capacity of data flow and quality of services offered without interruption problem.
The Minister of Communication Technologies, Nizar Ben Neji, gave the start of work on the new Ifriqiya cable on February 2, 2024. This cable, which connects Tunisia to Marseille, marks a crucial step in strengthening the country’s international connectivity and consolidates Tunisia’s digital sovereignty to launch the 5G service. Ben Néji stressed the importance of this project, considering it one of the major investment projects for the country.
