The Atsimo-Andrefana region is preparing to become the nerve center of Africa’s blue economy. From April 17 to 19, 2025, Toliara will host the second edition of the African Youth Forum on the Blue Economy.
This continental-scale event is part of the drive to promote sustainable management of marine and coastal resources. This Forum, an initiative approved by the Council of Ministers on December 18, will bring together 500 participants, including 300 young people from various African countries. Organized under the auspices of the Minister of Fisheries and the Blue Economy, Paubert Tsimanaoraty Mahatante, the event aims to inspire a new generation of leaders in this strategic sector for the continent’s development. The initial preparatory meetings have laid the groundwork for this event, with a particular focus on logistical coordination. Through discussions with local and international partners, issues related to the reception of participants, catering, and infrastructure provision have been addressed. These exchanges have also highlighted the need to beautify and secure Toliara to provide an environment conducive to this high-level event.
Great Potential
Local authorities, under the direction of the regional governor, are fully mobilized to meet expectations. A first meeting with regional officials is scheduled for early January, followed by broader consultations with all stakeholders involved in the blue economy sector. By hosting this forum, Madagascar hopes to strengthen its position on the international stage in terms of the blue economy and showcase the potential of Toliara, an iconic city in the southwest of the island. This event promises to be a pivotal moment for Africa’s youth and for the sustainable valorization of the continent’s marine resources.
