China: A giant new offshore platform to boost global oil production.
China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) has achieved a major feat with the launch of its heaviest international offshore platform to date. Built in Qingdao, Shandong province, this colossal structure promises to revolutionize the extraction and transportation of hydrocarbons on a global scale.
A giant of the seas is born
Weighing in at over 17,200 tonnes, this platform is distinguished by its imposing size, equivalent to a 24-storey building, and a deck the size of 15 basketball courts. After 34 months of hard work, she is set to reach her installation site, 6,400 nautical miles away, at the end of August.
Exceptional capacities
The Marjan platform, dedicated to gathering and transporting oil and gas, can handle 24 million tonnes of crude oil and 7.4 billion cubic metres of gas annually. This makes it one of the world’s largest and most efficient platforms in its field.
in Qingdao, Shandong province, eastern China.
Technology and Innovation
This complex facility is equipped with advanced pipeline networks, cutting-edge chemical processing systems, and operational control systems that optimize the efficiency of the extraction and transportation process of energy resources to onshore processing facilities.
Record and International Cooperation
The size of the platform, the length of its pipelines, and the complexity of its systems have all set new international records. This technical achievement is not only a victory for China; it also symbolizes the strengthening of Sino-Saudi energy cooperation, particularly within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.
Impact on Sino-Saudi Relations
The platform will play a key role in increasing the production of the Marjan oil field, highlighting the importance of collaboration between China and Saudi Arabia. This collaboration extends beyond mere resource extraction to include cross-investments in the downstream and midstream sectors of the oil industry.
A Promising Future
The inauguration of the Marjan platform marks a crucial milestone for CNOOC and for global energy cooperation. It reflects China’s ambition to play a leading role in global energy security and in the development of innovative and environmentally friendly technologies.
