After several months of interruption, China has greenlit the import of Japanese Nishikigoi ornamental carp.

Nishikigoi, or « brocade carp, » are raised in Japan and are highly valued in countries around the world. Currently, approximately 80% of the specimens produced in Japan are exported, with 60% of them farmed in Niigata Prefecture.

Beijing had previously required Japanese carp exporters to register their aquaculture sites in advance, but the deadline had expired in October of last year, leading to a suspension of exports from the following month.

Following negotiations with Japan, China has ultimately decided to re-register six aquaculture sites in Niigata, Fukuoka, and Hiroshima Prefectures.

Last month, China also agreed to ease its restrictions on imports of Japanese seafood products, which had been imposed in protest against the discharge of treated water from the Fukushima plant into the Pacific Ocean, a process that began in the summer of 2023 and continues to this day.
