The international tribunal for the Law of the Sea ruled on Tuesday in favor of a group of small island countries who asked it to strengthen the climate obligations of signatory states to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Sea. This treaty, ratified by 157 countries, imposes a “specific obligation to take all necessary measures to prevent, reduce and control marine pollution due to anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases”, he indicated in an advisory opinion.
