CMA CGM Launches « She Sails » to Promote Gender Diversity in Maritime Careers
In December, CMA CGM introduced She Sails: Empowering at Sea, an internal program aimed at advancing women’s maritime careers, particularly aboard ships. This initiative seeks to increase the appeal of maritime professions to women, who currently make up only 2% of the workforce. The program aligns with the company’s goal to recruit 500 women crew members by 2026—more than doubling the current figure.
The She Sails program focuses on three key pillars:
- Attractiveness:
To introduce young women to maritime professions and career opportunities within CMA CGM, the company offers onboard internships, specialized scholarships, and a mentorship program. This mentorship, led by female mariners, provides guidance on professional growth and personal development. Stories from women already working in maritime roles are highlighted to inspire the next generation. - Promotion:
CMA CGM plans outreach initiatives targeting women pursuing maritime studies. These efforts aim to showcase the company’s career opportunities and sustainability efforts, emphasizing its decarbonization strategies. - Retention:
CMA CGM is committed to gender equality in career opportunities, advancement, and pay. The company also offers leadership programs such as WE – Women Empowerment, as well as training in management, negotiation, and decision-making.
“Currently, women are underrepresented in our crews, which does not align with our ambitions. Through She Sails, we are promoting maritime careers for women, making onboard life as accommodating as possible, and increasing their presence on our ships. We know we can count on our crew members to be ambassadors of She Sails, sharing their experiences and helping create a more inclusive maritime sector,” stated Christine Cabau Woehrel, CMA CGM’s Executive Vice President.
