The Threatened Ocean, Essential to Life on Earth
On average, 80 million tonnes of fish are reported caught at sea each year. An additional 26 million tonnes could be added, caught illegally. This represents 11 to 19% of the global fish catch, further depleting the Ocean.
Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing is an economic, social, environmental, and political scourge. Beyond putting fish stocks in danger and threatening global food security, it also involves corruption, mafia practices, modern-day slavery, and organized crime. IUU fishing leads to the overexploitation of our Oceans, disrupts marine ecosystems, and undermines a sustainable economic model, depriving the global economy of 10 to 23 billion dollars.
IUU Fishing: A Ticking Time Bomb
The Fondation de la Mer is raising awareness among the public and policymakers by presenting a report on illegal fishing, accompanied by 89 recommendations to break the destructive cycle.
This investigative report is the result of two years of research, 44 interviews conducted with fishing industry experts, and the involvement of two satellite operators.
