Abidjan, October 28, 2025 (AIP) – Gabon has taken a new step in its sustainable aquaculture development strategy with the organization of a training workshop on the formulation of fish feeds tailored to local needs, reports the Gabonese Press Agency (AGP) on Sunday, October 26, 2025.

The activity was held from October 22 to 24 in Libreville by the Ministry of the Sea, Fisheries, and Blue Economy, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

As part of project TCP/GAB/3803, the workshop aimed to strengthen the technical capacities of aquaculture stakeholders, enabling them to master the production of high-performance extruded feeds adapted to local realities.

Representing Minister Laurence Ndong at the closing ceremony, Legal Advisor Kevin Raphaël Sima Methogo emphasized that “the development of national aquaculture is not a secondary option but a strategic priority for our food security, economy, and employment.”

With FAO’s technical support, Gabon has already achieved several notable advances, including the establishment of a local extruded feed production unit, the installation of a hatchery at the Institute of Agronomic and Forestry Research (IRAF), the acquisition of modern aquaculture equipment, and specialized training for fish farmers.

This initiative, backed by President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, reflects the government’s determination to make Gabon a regional leader in sustainable aquaculture production, while reducing dependence on food imports and enhancing the value of its fishery resources.
