A workshop was held on Monday in Djerba to mark the conclusion of the initiative “Djerba: Low Single-Use Plastic Zone”, launched on the island five months ago for the first time.

The initiative aims to involve tourism establishments, including hotels, restaurants, and cafés, in reducing plastic usage to curb pollution and limit its harmful effects on health and the environment, said Mahdia Fraj, coordinator of the initiative.

She explained that five tourism units in Djerba (three hotels, one restaurant, and one café) have joined the initiative through a dedicated digital platform. Each establishment enters its single-use plastic consumption data on the platform, which then calculates annual consumption and costs, and provides solutions, recommendations, and an action plan tailored to each establishment to reduce usage.

This approach helps improve the environmental rating of the establishment and classifies it as an “eco-responsible” structure, she added to TAP.

The first results of this experience show a reduction in plastic use, an improved ranking, and the adoption of alternative solutions. According to the coordinator, the establishments responded positively and will continue their commitments despite the official end of the initiative.

Amel Hanini, a representative from one of the participating tourism units, described the initiative as “positive”, highlighting the significant progress made in reducing plastic use and waste volume. She emphasized the importance of the platform, which provides customized solutions and ideas for alternatives to plastic, thereby reducing both waste and costs.

The workshop, organized by the Association “Active Citizens for Development”, also presented the platform and how to access it, enabling tourism establishments to benefit from practical tools to reduce their plastic consumption.

It should be noted that several similar initiatives are being implemented in the region as part of the “Djerba Without Plastic” project, which aims to reduce single-use plastic consumption.
