Macron announced in Djibouti a strategic shift for the French military presence in Africa. The Djiboutian base, previously focused on the Indian Ocean, is becoming the new support point for French operations on the continent.

“Djibouti is transforming into a platform for our interventions in Africa,” said the president. This shift is explained by the gradual withdrawal from the Sahel, as a result of political changes in the region.

France is thus adapting its military presence to a changing African context. Partnerships are evolving, and expectations are too. “Our role in Africa is evolving,” Macron emphasized, “in line with our partners.”

Thanks to its strategic location and the strength of the Franco-Djiboutian partnership, the Djibouti base will play a central role. It will serve as a support point for operations in Africa, while also ensuring maritime security.
