Ways to promote the blue economy and maritime governance in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region were the focus of an international conference on oceans, organized on Monday in Dubai.
This meeting, marked by the participation of experts from the marine environment, addressed the health of the oceans through four main themes, namely the blue economy, maritime governance, marine sciences and maritime cooperation.
In this regard, Razan Al Mubarak, President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), also high-level UN champion on climate change at COP28, highlighted that this conclave aims to support commitments environmental issues and recognition of the major role of the ocean in the cultural and economic fabric of the MENA region.
The conference aims to redefine the way ocean health is approached on a global scale, promote cross-border cooperation and encourage the sharing of knowledge in the service of cooperation and the exchange of expertise between countries and industrial circles. and academics and non-profit organizations in the MENA region.
According to the organizers, this conference also marks the start of the implementation of the “MENA Oceans” network, building on the momentum created since the 2023 COP28, with the aim of raising awareness of the region’s unique marine environments. and the specific challenges they face, but also to develop partnerships that generate synergies and innovative solutions and to achieve positive change in the region.
