“Ecological Transition is a Lie”: Yann Arthus-Bertrand Criticizes Environmental Policies

VIDEO – Guest on Buzz TV, the photographer and environmental activist launches his latest film, Nature: Pour une Réconciliation, airing tonight on M6. A chance to reflect on the state of the planet and share his deep connection to life.

A tireless environmental activist for over 40 years, photographer and filmmaker Yann Arthus-Bertrand is presenting his latest film tonight on M6. However, his assessment of the planet’s health is far from optimistic: “Have you seen the chaos we’re living in? Look at Mayotte, look at Los Angeles, January was the hottest month in history, and now Trump, a climate skeptic, is back in power in the U.S.—it’s all terrifying,” he says.

“Green Fatigue” and a Struggle for Hope

Despite his enduring optimism, Arthus-Bertrand admits that making an ecological film with a hopeful message is increasingly difficult: “Ecology is no longer fashionable, and politically, it’s easy to push it aside,” he observes. “But reality is catching up with us. We are living through the sixth mass extinction, destroying in 150 years what took millions of years to evolve! Right now, we all have ‘green fatigue’ because there is never any good news about the environment. Making a film that offers some hope and inspires action is essential.”

Fighting for the Planet

Arthus-Bertrand refuses to give up and urges everyone to fight for the planet in their own way: “I made this film with an open heart because I realize my unconditional love for life—maybe because I’m getting older… But I know we can all do something in our own way. I became a vegetarian. It’s the easiest thing to do for the planet. We have to stop with industrial meat—it’s destroying the Earth!”

“Elon Musk Wants to Go to Mars—That’s Nonsense!”

The filmmaker no longer believes in political leaders, whom he equates with their voters: “Politicians are a reflection of who we are. If we don’t want to change, they won’t push us to do so. I also no longer believe in COP conferences. Organizing them in oil-producing countries makes no sense!”

He also takes aim at Elon Musk’s ambition to colonize Mars: “Earth is unique—we must preserve it. When I hear Elon Musk saying we should go to Mars, it’s complete nonsense! We’re not going to live on Mars—that’s ridiculous…”

The Illusion of Ecological Transition

Arthus-Bertrand harshly criticizes what he sees as a global deception: “The ecological transition is a lie and makes no sense. We developed wind turbines and solar panels, which should have reduced fossil fuel use. But the opposite happened—fossil fuel extraction, including coal and shale gas, is at an all-time high.”

The Challenge of Environmental Documentaries

Finally, he acknowledges that while television must continue airing ecological documentaries to raise awareness, it’s a difficult task given low viewership: “I love what Hugo Clément does and respect his approach. I never criticize people who talk about ecology because, even if we have different perspectives, we can only succeed together. But ecology on TV is tough—it’s mostly bad news. People have told me they don’t watch my films because they’re too depressing,” he admits.
