Granted to the private sector, this international port project in New Alamein City is specifically aimed at welcoming luxury yachts and cruise ships, with the goal of further developing high-end tourism. The Egyptian government is preparing to launch a new international tourist port, specially designed to accommodate luxury yachts and cruise ships. Located in New Alamein City on Egypt’s northwest coast, this project is part of a broader plan to develop nautical tourism. The investment is estimated at nearly $80 million.
The port will cover an area of approximately 180,000 m² and will be developed in several phases. According to available information, the private sector will manage, operate, and eventually finance the superstructures, while the government’s role will be limited to developing basic infrastructure, including access, the harbor basin, and utility connections.
New Alamein, located in the Marsa Matrouh Governorate about 100 km west of Alexandria, is designed to become a premier tourist and residential destination. The city will feature a luxury marina, high-end residences, international hotels, and modern urban amenities.
Boosting High-End Nautical Tourism
In Egypt, the number of tourist yachts nearly doubled last year, reaching 393 units compared to 201 the previous year. This increase is due to the simplification of entry and exit procedures in Egyptian ports and the expedited issuance of licenses, now obtainable in just one hour through the electronic platform dedicated to tourist yachts, launched at the end of 2022. Passenger traffic has followed the same trend, with 3,371 people welcomed over the year, from diverse nationalities including Egyptian, Spanish, British, French, Indian, American, South African, and Philippine.
Egypt currently has 23 marinas along the Red Sea and Mediterranean, with top-notch facilities such as Porto Marina in Hurghada, covering 60,000 m² and accommodating 188 yachts; Taba Heights Marina with a capacity of 50 yachts; and Marassi Marina on the northern coast, able to host 260 yachts.
In this context, the future New Alamein port is a strategic project aimed at strengthening luxury tourism and attracting high-end clientele. Designed to accommodate prestigious yachts and cruise ships, the port will feature modern infrastructure and services aligned with international standards, targeting an upscale international market.
