The Minister of the Environment, Habib Abid, indicated that his department has submitted to the services of the Presidency of the Government, 4 draft laws for the creation of marine and coastal protected areas (AMCP).
Speaking at a debate session held on Friday by the National Council of Regions and Districts (CNRD), he added that Tunisia does not yet have any marine area despite the promulgation since 2029 of a law relating to these marine sites, whose role is mainly to preserve marine and coastal ecosystems and habitats, protect endemic, vulnerable, rare or threatened species; and conserve fragile ecosystems.
The four marine and coastal sites presented to create the AMCP, the minister further specifies, concern the Galite (Jalta) archipelago, the Zembra and Zembretta archipelago, Kûriat Island and the Cap Bon lagoons.
The creation of these areas, which aims to develop Tunisian tourism, will also allow these regions to rise to the level of fish breeding sites and animal resources, he added.
Regarding the governance of coastal zone management, the Minister of the Environment stressed that his department has approximately 500,000 dinars in funding for the development of certain studies, citing in particular the Coastal Protection study of the Governorate of Sfax.
During his speech, the minister stressed the importance of strengthening the monitoring of factories located near the courses of wadis, recalling, in the same context, that his department has put in place several actions and programs to monitor the quality of water in the main wadis.
