The start-up WaveTech has developed an “innovative” system powered by ocean waves to restore sand to areas threatened by erosion. A large-scale test is expected to take place at Les Combots Beach in Saint-Palais-sur-Mer.

An Urgent Need for Coastal Protection

Erosion is a growing concern in the Royan region, with dramatic coastline retreat recorded in several areas. In February 2024, violent storms and high tides swept away 20 meters of the Vélodyssée cycling path along the beach. Another storm in January 2025 forced authorities to close a section of the same path near La Tremblade’s Embellie Beach.

Even the famous Phare de la Coubre, a historic lighthouse on the Côte Sauvage, faces an uncertain future due to the relentless advance of the sea.

A Green Light for Testing

WaveTech’s project has already received approval from the National Forestry Office (ONF), the Coastal Conservatory, and the municipality of Saint-Palais-sur-Mer. Now, they await the final authorization from the Departmental Directorate of Territories and the Sea (DDTM) to begin testing.

This could mark a breakthrough in sustainable coastal protection, offering hope for preserving France’s vulnerable shorelines.
