Morocco Awarded at the 47th Session of the FAO General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) in Rome
Morocco was honored at the 47th session of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) held in Rome, Italy, where the Kingdom received the GFCM Compliance Award. This prestigious recognition was given for Morocco’s successful integration of the commission’s decisions into its legal frameworks and the accurate submission of data. The award was also granted to other countries, including the Arab Republic of Egypt, Albania, Turkey, Montenegro, as well as the European Union and its member states.
The 47th session provided a platform to adopt proposals aimed at the development of fisheries and aquaculture in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. Miguel Bernal, the executive secretary of the commission, stated that “this annual session marks the culmination of a year of intense collaborative efforts and demonstrates the ongoing commitment of commission members to addressing the growing challenges facing the fisheries and aquaculture sector in our region.”
Mohamed Malouli Idrissi, Director of the Tangier Center at Morocco’s National Institute for Fisheries Research, emphasized that “the decisions we have collectively adopted this week will further guide the sector towards sustainability, ensuring it continues to play a crucial role in livelihoods, food security, and nutrition in the Mediterranean region.” This session concluded with the adoption of 17 key decisions, including 12 binding recommendations.
