Organized from June 2 to 13 in Nice, the third United Nations Ocean Conference will be preceded by the One Ocean Science Congress, the Blue Economy and Finance Forum, and the Conference dedicated to the Ocean Rise & Coastal Resilience Coalition. The IRD (French Research Institute for Development) is participating actively in these crucial events for the future of marine ecosystems, leveraging its scientific presence across the five oceans and a model combining partnership research, innovation, training, and awareness-raising.

Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and Southern. Five oceans that, in reality, form a single vast, interconnected, and ever-moving ecosystem—the largest on our planet. Driven by global dynamics, these ocean basins are linked by currents that redistribute water, heat, salt, and nutrients, shaping global climatic and biological balances.

But this unique ocean—essential for life on Earth, climate regulation, and food supply—is under constant pressure: economic and population growth, urbanization, overexploitation, coastal development, pollution, and anthropogenic climate change. Faced with these environmental, political, and social challenges, science enables us to better understand marine ecosystems and to guide public decision-making.
