While models anticipate a possible disappearance of these birds by 2100, four new colonies of emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) have been discovered in Antarctica, one of which is believed to number more than 1000 individuals. This discovery was made by the British Antarctic Survey (United Kingdom).

Clearly visible droppings
This brings their number of colonies to 66. The evolution and movements of these populations are monitored by following, on satellite images, their droppings clearly visible on the white ice.
