France: A Great White Shark Spotted Near Porquerolles and Port-Cros Islands
In early November, a boater spotted and filmed a four-meter-long great white shark off the coast of Porquerolles and Port-Cros islands in the Var region.
The species identification was confirmed this week by the National Museum of Natural History in Paris (MNHN) and the Phocaean Shark Research Group (GPER).
This is a rare occurrence, as great white sharks are not commonly seen in these waters. According to GPER, about 40 specimens have been reported in the Gulf of Lion since 1600. In 2022, a nearly five-meter-long female shark was observed in the Camargue.
