A workshop on means of developing port traffic at the port of Gabès was organized on Wednesday, as part of the study relating to the development of a master plan and management of Tunisian commercial maritime ports in horizon 2040.
The participants in this meeting, held at the initiative of the management of the commercial port of Gabès, underlined the need to strengthen the port’s infrastructure by creating new quays with berthing and mooring structures and a terminal. for passengers, which would make it possible to create additional activities contributing to improving the economic profitability of the port, including container and vehicle transport activities and the reception of tourist cruises.
Once completed, this work will place the commercial port of Gabès among the most important commercial maritime ports in the country, given its strategic location, its connection to the rail network, its proximity to the highway and its nautical data with a draft of less than 13.5 meters, they estimated, emphasizing the promising prospects of the port especially with the completion of the Economic Corridors project which will connect the governorate of Gabès to the south of Algeria.
Note that the commercial port of Gabès includes two basins (exterior and interior) covering 80 hectares, a turning circle has a diameter of 600 meters, a North pier 2880 m long and a South pier 1460 m long which protect the port against waves in the prevailing winds.
