The infrastructure of the Zarat fishing port (Gabès Governorate) has significantly deteriorated in recent years, posing a serious threat to local fishermen, warned Abdessalem Dahmeni, a member of the Assembly of the Representatives of the People.
Speaking to TAP news agency, Dahmeni explained that fishermen often struggle to access the port due to both the degraded state of its infrastructure and the persistent silting at the entrance.
He criticized the relevant authorities for the delay in carrying out the long-announced redevelopment of the port — a project approved during the Ministerial Council on June 25, 2015. Although feasibility studies have been completed, no call for tenders has been issued to date.
“There is no justification for the delay in implementing this critical project,” he added, urging for swift action to launch the necessary works.
In a related development, the Governor of Gabès, Radhouane Nsibi, visited the Zarat port last week to assess the state of the infrastructure firsthand. He called for urgent measures to protect the fishermen and emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to address the port’s critical condition.
It is worth noting that the Gabès delegation has a coastal strip stretching over 85 kilometers, yet only two maritime fishing ports — Gabès and Zarat — serve the entire region, despite the strategic importance of the sector.
