On April 7th and 8th, searches were conducted in several locations, including the Regional Council office in Basse-Terre, as part of an investigation into the use of public funds. Investigators are reportedly focusing on European funds that the Guadeloupe Region may have allocated to Routes de Guadeloupe, which were originally intended for biodiversity protection. The Region has responded to these searches.
The searches, carried out by the Pointe-à-Pitre Research Division, were initiated upon request from the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. They aim to clarify allegations concerning the management of public funds and contracts awarded for roadworks following the devastating effects of Storm Fiona in September 2022.
The Region Defends Itself
In a statement, the Guadeloupe Region justifies its actions by referring to the urgency created by Fiona, a climatic phenomenon of « rare violence » that caused major damage. It emphasizes that it acted « in the exclusive interest of the citizens and in compliance with the law, » mobilizing exceptional resources to ensure people’s safety.
Collaboration with Justice
The Region assures that it is actively cooperating with investigators to « facilitate the investigation and contribute to uncovering the truth. » It promises to provide « complete and swift » answers to the raised questions.
As the investigation continues, the people of Guadeloupe are awaiting clarifications on the management of public funds in this context.
