On Monday, May 19 at 9:05 p.m., France 5 will broadcast a special episode of Le Monde de Jamy titled How Can We Save the Mediterranean?

Turquoise waters, vibrant reefs, dolphins and whales—how much longer can we enjoy the wonders of the Mediterranean coast? How fast are our beaches disappearing? Which fish can we eat without contributing to overfishing? And are jellyfish going to take over?

Due to overtourism, pollution, and climate change, the “Big Blue” has never been more threatened. Plastic waste is now found in the stomachs of fish and even in the deepest parts of the sea. But solutions do exist.

Jamy Gourmaud takes viewers on a journey to meet those fighting to protect this unique ecosystem. People like Anouck, who dives to replant underwater vegetation torn up by boat anchors. Or Guillaume, a sailor campaigning against pollution from massive cruise ships. Denis is working to save whales—about fifty are killed each year in collisions with ferries. Biologists are also studying invasive species like the blue crab, whose spread is fueled by warming waters and increased international shipping.

There’s also good news: rising temperatures have led to more frequent births of baby sea turtles, now seen increasingly along the beaches of the French Riviera.
