Attached to the French Navy, this strategic site analyzes in real time all maritime incidents, from acts of piracy off the Horn of Africa to the jamming of ships’ GPS data.
In a small, silent room tucked away in the basement of the maritime prefecture in Brest (Finistère), a handful of men and women keep watch over the vastness of the seas. The discreet MICA Center (Maritime Information Cooperation and Awareness Center), attached to the French Navy, analyzes all maritime incidents in real time, from acts of piracy off the Horn of Africa to the jamming of ships’ GPS data.
Since the US-Israeli attack on Iran on February 28, he has been providing assistance to the 20,000 crew members and ships stranded in the Persian Gulf. He sends them real-time updates, via encrypted messaging, on every incident as well as safety instructions: stay away from warships and energy infrastructure, or turn off their transponders to avoid detection.
Several merchant ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz or sailing near it have been damaged by projectiles from missile debris, explosive boats, or drones. Between February 28 and March 17, 23 incidents were recorded, including 16 attacks, resulting in seven deaths.
