The coastal region of Gabès is set to host a pilot site to produce this gas from renewable energy sources. However, this highly energy-consuming project also requires large amounts of water, a concern in a country struggling with drought. Stretching for nearly four kilometers, from the road that runs along the coastline to the beach, verdant agricultural plots blend with the orange-colored earth. Welcome to Métouia, a peaceful town of 13,000 residents located along the Gulf of Gabès in southern Tunisia.
“It’s a pristine place like there are few left,” marvels an amateur fisherman, before expressing his frustration: “Are they really going to destroy everything? All of this just to export hydrogen to Germany?” he grumbles before disappearing. The concern about the future of this landscape has quickly spread among the local population since the region was chosen to host a « pilot project » for the production of « green » hydrogen, produced from renewable energy sources like solar and wind.
