Launch of Paper Bag Distribution in Greater Tunis Bakeries to Reduce Plastic Pollution

The Ministry of the Environment has launched the distribution of paper bags with awareness and prevention labels in several subsidized and modern bakeries across the Greater Tunis region. This initiative is part of the ministry’s efforts to reduce plastic pollution and promote eco-friendly alternatives, announced Awatef Arabi Messaï, Director of Quality of Life at the ministry.

Speaking to the Tunis-Afrique-Presse (TAP) agency, Awatef Arabi Messaï explained that the initiative aims to limit the use of single-use plastic bags and raise awareness among citizens about the importance of adopting environmentally friendly packaging materials. She emphasized that this effort aligns with agreements signed with professional bakery chambers on March 17, 2023, regarding the improvement of bread packaging materials.

Additionally, on Friday, February 28, the Ministry of the Environment announced the signing of a cooperation agreement with the Bank of Tunisia and the Emirates (BTE). Under this agreement, the bank will finance the production and distribution of 100,000 paper bags to support bakeries during the month of Ramadan. This collaboration seeks to enhance environmental preservation efforts and encourage sustainable practices in the food sector.
