đ Nice, June 8
On June 8, the inaugural edition of the Starfish Barometer will be published in the scientific journal State of the Planet and presented to Heads of State and Government during the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference.
The Starfish Barometer is a peer-reviewed, annual scientific report offering a clear overview of global ocean health, human pressures, and societal impacts.
Led by Dr. Marina Levy and Mercator Ocean CEO Pierre Bahurel, the first edition was developed by a multidisciplinary team of leading ocean experts and overseen by the International Scientific Committee of the One Ocean Science Congress.
The starfish serves as a powerful visual metaphor: its five arms represent the essential dimensions of our relationship with the ocean â marine health, human pressures, societal impacts, progress in protection, and the benefits the ocean provides.
The Barometer is designed to offer world leaders clear, reliable evidence to inform decision-making and track annual progress toward restoring ocean health.
It supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and aligns with the #UNOC3 commitment to strengthen the role of science in shaping marine policy.
By distilling complex ocean challenges into five interconnected domains, the Starfish Barometer helps leaders focus on what matters most: ensuring a healthy, resilient ocean for people and the planet.
