The Lorient-based company Windcoop has just reached €1.4 million in its third citizen fundraising campaign, with nearly 2,500 members participating. ICI provides an update this Monday on the project, which aims to decarbonize maritime transport.
Nils Joyeux, the cooperative’s CEO, had hoped to raise €1 million by December 31, 2025. He ultimately reached €1.4 million. Windcoop’s third fundraising campaign was a success, attracting 2,463 members, mostly individuals motivated to drive decarbonization in maritime transport. “Some contributed €100, others €100,000,” Nils Joyeux noted on Monday, January 13.
“They are interested in showing that it’s possible to build a container ship that saves 60% of carbon compared to a conventional cargo ship, but they are also happy to own a small piece of the vessel and become co-shipowners,” Joyeux explains. “Another motivation: participating in a different kind of economy. We explain why the ship is being built in Turkey, and the issues between foreign and French sailors. In short, to participate.”
First Plate Cut in Turkey, Breton Subcontractors Involved
The ship’s first steel plate was cut on December 19, 2025, at the RMK Marine shipyard in Turkey. The sails will be manufactured in Saint-Nazaire, and several Breton subcontractors in Lorient and the Crozon peninsula have already been selected. Other contracts are under negotiation. In the long term, the Lorient-based company will hire about ten people to operate the vessel, which will serve the Marseille-Madagascar route.
Still Possible to Become a Member
“We are ending the communication campaign, but new members are still welcome,” Nils Joyeux clarifies. The funds will be used in particular to equip the cargo ship. Subscriptions are secure.
