The Institut Halieutique et des Sciences Marines (IHSM) in Toliara has inaugurated two state-of-the-art laboratories dedicated to marine research: the Molecular Biology Laboratory and the Materials Analysis and Testing Laboratory.
Aimed at strengthening marine research and biodiversity conservation in Madagascar, the IHSM in Toliara has officially launched two new laboratories. The Molecular Biology Laboratory—the first of its kind in Madagascar—specializes in marine molecular biology. Developed through a collaboration between Harvard University and the South African National Research Foundation, this lab enables local genetic analyses and molecular identification of marine species. This is a major step forward for biodiversity conservation, as samples no longer need to be sent abroad for analysis; tests can now be conducted locally according to international standards. Equipment needed for the research is also currently being delivered.
Innovation in Marine Resources
The Materials Analysis and Testing Laboratory was established in partnership with the University of Mons in Belgium. It focuses on the research and transformation of marine algae from aquaculture into biodegradable plastic. Its equipment is already fully operational. These initiatives align with IHSM’s strategy to boost research and training in marine sciences. They reflect the institute’s strong commitment to promoting sustainable use of marine resources and contributing actively to scientific research in Madagascar.
Both high-tech laboratories were officially inaugurated last Friday by the Minister, Professor Loulla Chaminah, during her visit to Toliara.
