Nuclear Power Soon in Maritime Transport
The maritime sector, which accounts for 90% of global trade, is now turning towards a major energy revolution: the use of fourth-generation nuclear reactors to power container ships. This innovation could radically transform the way commercial vessels traverse the oceans. Currently, three European companies—Lloyd’s Register, CORE POWER, and A.P. Moller – Maersk—are initiating a joint study to assess the technical and regulatory feasibility of this technology.
This collaboration, driven by a shared commitment to decarbonize the maritime industry, focuses on analyzing safety challenges, radioactive waste management, and regulatory acceptability. The fourth-generation nuclear reactors at the heart of this initiative promise safer and more efficient integration into ships. These reactors are designed to drastically reduce carbon emissions while enhancing the operational efficiency of commercial fleets.
