A new scientific study raises alarms as it reveals that more than a third of the wetlands in the Mediterranean Basin are at risk of flooding due to rising sea levels caused by climate change. This could destroy vital habitats for coastal birds.
320 Coastal Wetlands Concerned
Coastal wetlands are among the most vulnerable ecosystems affected by climate change. Due to rising waters, over half of them worldwide could be submerged by 2100, as highlighted by previous studies. According to the latest research, 320 coastal wetlands in the Mediterranean are currently at risk. The most pessimistic projections suggest this number could rise to 495 in the coming years.
The loss of these wetlands would not only harm biodiversity but also significantly impact the ecological balance of the region. Wetlands play a crucial role in filtering water, supporting wildlife, and acting as a buffer against storm surges and coastal erosion.
