United Nations (New York) – For the first time, the UN Secretary-General has highlighted in his annual report on the Moroccan Sahara the Royal vision “to make the Atlantic coast a gateway for trade and economic integration with Africa and the Americas by facilitating access for the Sahel countries to the Atlantic.”

Referring to His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s speech delivered on the occasion of the 48th anniversary of the Green March in November 2023, Mr. Guterres informed Security Council members about Morocco’s initiative aimed at enhancing the role of the Moroccan Sahara as a regional economic hub, facilitating exchanges between sub-Saharan Africa and the rest of the world.

As a result, Security Council members are now able to witness, with supporting evidence, the serious and credible efforts of the Kingdom of Morocco, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, towards a cooperative regional approach to development that provides solutions beyond purely security or military strategies, offering landlocked African countries, particularly Sahelian nations, access to Morocco’s road, port, and rail infrastructures.

The Secretary-General’s report serves as a strong diplomatic promotion that will enable the UN’s executive body to invest in the Royal Atlantic strategy, based on solid South-South cooperation with its African neighbors, with a view to its formal recognition and incorporation into UN policies and projects.
