On the occasion of the immersive exhibition « Mediterranean 2050 » at the Monaco Oceanographic Museum, Mr. Robert Calcagno, Director General of the Monaco Oceanographic Institute, shared his vision to save the sea.
« The Mediterranean is our sea, it is beautiful but also extremely threatened, » he states right away.
With 500 million inhabitants along its shores and 360 million tourists per year, this nearly closed sea faces intense ecological pressure.
« We propose a utopia by 2050: to transform this endangered sea into a sea that is 100% well-managed, » he continues.
He advocates for sustainable fisheries management, the development of marine protected areas, and more rational maritime traffic.
According to him, there is no miracle solution. « But if we set a vision and work together, we can achieve it. »
Monaco aims to be a driving force: « We are ready to organize scientific explorations, exhibitions, and even host this exhibition in Tunisia. »
The strong bilateral relations between Tunisia and Monaco are highlighted. « I hope that in 2027, we can carry out a joint exploration mission. »
A realistic and motivating ambition, showing that scientific and cultural cooperation is essential for the future of the Mediterranean.
