The 16th edition of the Monaco Blue Initiative opened this morning at the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco, with Prince Albert II, who reminded everyone of the necessity to preserve the oceans.

This year, the Monaco Blue Initiative offered three major discussion sessions bringing together experts, decision-makers, and stakeholders from the maritime sector to address the challenges and opportunities related to ocean conservation.

The first panel explores the transition to a regenerative blue economy, a model that aims to go beyond sustainable exploitation to actively restore marine ecosystems. The speakers analyze the role of key sectors such as maritime transport, tourism, and renewable energy, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation and sustainable financing to support this change.

The second session focuses on the role of science in decision-making for ocean management and conservation. Experts discuss ways to improve the dialogue between scientists and policymakers so that available research and data can better inform public policies and economic strategies. The emphasis is on the importance of a fact-based approach to ensure effective management of marine resources and ecosystems, from coastal areas to the deep sea.

Finally, the last panel addresses the crucial issue of financing the blue economy and highlights ways to accelerate the mobilization of financial resources to support ocean conservation. Discussions center on the increasing involvement of banks, investors, and philanthropic funds, as well as the need to develop innovative financial mechanisms to achieve the sustainable development goals related to oceans.

What is the Monaco Blue Initiative?

The Monaco Blue Initiative (MBI) is an international dialogue platform that brings together experts, policymakers, scientists, and economic stakeholders committed to ocean protection each year. Launched in 2010 by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, it aims to foster exchanges between the public and private sectors to identify concrete solutions that reconcile the preservation of marine ecosystems with the development of a sustainable blue economy.

Each edition gathers high-level participants from international organizations, scientific institutions, and the business world to address the challenges and opportunities related to the sustainable management of oceans. Through round tables and debates, the MBI enables the exploration of innovative strategies and encourages cooperation among maritime stakeholders. Ahead of major global environmental milestones, such as the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice in May, the MBI plays a key role in raising awareness and shaping policies that promote better marine environment protection.
