The giants of the fish farming industry have won their case with the federal government. A planned marine protected area off the coast of Newfoundland will be 30% smaller than originally proposed.

In June 2023, Ottawa launched a feasibility study to establish a national marine conservation area in southwestern Newfoundland.

The initial plan was to create a protected zone covering 9,114 square kilometers, extending up to 40 nautical miles off the coast.
However, the revised project now envisions that this national conservation area, called the South Coast Fjords, will instead cover 6,491 square kilometers.

During deliberations, the committee responsible for overseeing the project consulted with an advisory committee from the aquaculture industry, which operates fish farms in enclosures off the coast of Newfoundland.
