The French textile industry is welcoming a promising innovation with SAO Textile, a startup founded in 2023 by stylist Marine Olacia.
Her concept? Transforming used fishing nets into recycled yarn, a first for the nets used in tuna fishing. By collecting these marine waste materials from fishermen in Occitanie, the young company is contributing to the relocation of textile production in France and the reduction of plastic waste in the sea. « The entire transformation and manufacturing process is carried out on French soil, » emphasizes the entrepreneur.
The year 2025 marks a key milestone for SAO Textile, which aims to industrialize its project. After laboratory tests and the creation of a first prototype T-shirt, the startup is preparing a fundraising round to accelerate its production. The dual goal is to launch the commercialization of its yarn spools by 2026 and to structure a collection system from fishermen. Currently, four shipowners based in Sète, Agde, and Port-Vendres are already participating in the project, providing a stock of 150 tons of used nets. « One kilogram of nets allows for the production of 20 kilometers of recycled yarn, equivalent to seven technical T-shirts, » says Marine Olacia.
This recycled yarn is not limited to fashion; it is also of interest to industries such as automotive, workwear, and advertising. Several major brands, particularly in luxury and sports, have already expressed interest in this innovative and sustainable material.
Alongside this industrial growth, SAO Textile is part of the « La Mer en Commun » initiative for the Year of the Sea 2025 in France. A major event is already scheduled: On March 6th, an exhibition titled « From the Mediterranean to Fashion: Marine Upcycling & Ecological Awareness » will be presented at the National Navy Museum in Paris. In collaboration with the Paul Poiret School of Art, Fashion, and Performing Arts, the exhibition will highlight creations made by students from recycled fishing nets. Labelled by the Ministry of Ecological Transition, Biodiversity, Forests, and Fisheries, it aims to raise public awareness about the challenges of recycling and sustainable fashion.
With its motto « Less Nets, More Yarn, » SAO Textile carries a powerful message: one of a more circular and environmentally responsible textile industry.
