The French textile industry is embracing a promising innovation with SAO Textile, a startup founded in 2023 by designer Marine Olacia.
Its concept? Transforming used fishing nets into recycled yarn, a first for nets used in tuna fishing. By collecting these marine waste materials from fishermen in Occitania, the young company is contributing to the relocation of textile production in France and reducing plastic waste in the sea. « The entire transformation and manufacturing process is carried out in France, » emphasizes the entrepreneur.
The year 2025 marks a key milestone for SAO Textile, which aims to industrialize its project. After laboratory tests and the creation of a first t-shirt prototype, the startup is preparing to raise funds to accelerate its production. The goal is twofold: to launch the commercialization of its spools of yarn by 2026 and to structure a collection chain with fishermen. Currently, four shipowners based in Sète, Agde, and Port-Vendres are already participating in the project, providing a stock of 150 tons of used nets. « One kilo of nets can produce 20 kilometers of recycled yarn, which is the equivalent of seven technical t-shirts, » specifies Marine Olacia.
This recycled yarn is not limited to fashion; it also attracts sectors such as automotive, workwear, and advertising. Several major brands, particularly in luxury and sports, have already expressed interest in this innovative and responsible material.
Alongside this industrial expansion, SAO Textile is part of the initiative « La Mer en Commun » for the Year of the Sea 2025 in France. A major event is already planned: on March 6, an exhibition titled « From the Mediterranean to Fashion: Marine Upcycling & Ecological Awareness » will be presented at the National Navy Museum in Paris. In collaboration with the Paul Poiret School of Arts, Fashion, and Entertainment, this exhibition will showcase creations made by students using recycled fishing nets. Certified by the Ministry of Ecological Transition, Biodiversity, Forests, and Fishing, it aims to raise public awareness of the challenges of recycling and sustainable fashion.
With its slogan « Less Nets, More Yarn, » SAO Textile carries a strong message: that of a more circular and environmentally respectful textile industry.
