Italy and Tunisia are joining forces to enhance health surveillance in the Mediterranean. The Mednet 4OH project, officially launched in Tunis, aims to create an innovative digital platform for the rapid detection and effective response to emerging health threats.
This ambitious project, funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and led by the Zooprophylactic Institute of Abruzzo and Molise (IZS Teramo), adopts a « One Health » approach that views human, animal, and environmental health as interconnected.
At the core of Mednet 4OH is a next-generation genomic platform. This digital tool will enable real-time monitoring of pathogen spread through advanced genetic sequencing technologies. By quickly analyzing genetic data from biological samples, scientists can identify new strains of viruses or bacteria and anticipate future epidemics.
Alessandro Prunas, Italy’s ambassador to Tunisia, emphasized the importance of this cooperation: « Through collaboration with Tunisian authorities, we are developing digital tools for efficient surveillance and optimal response to health threats. »
Nicola D’Alterio, Director General of IZS Teramo, highlighted the significance of knowledge and resource sharing to address global health challenges: « This project marks an important step in strengthening regional cooperation and improving health security across the Mediterranean. »
Mednet 4OH will not only benefit Tunisia but also fosters regional collaboration among Mediterranean countries in public health. By sharing data and expertise, countries can better prepare for future health crises, including pandemics and epidemics.
This three-year project represents a major investment in public health. By equipping Tunisia and the region with a cutting-edge epidemiological surveillance platform, Italy and its partners are contributing to the resilience of healthcare systems and the protection of populations.
