The Ministry of Environment & Climate Change has officially declared a nationwide ban on the importation, trade, and use of plastic bags, effective from June 30, 2024. This decisive action comes after extensive consultations with the business community, environmental experts, and the general public, highlighting the urgent need to address plastic pollution in the environment.
The ban, legislated under the directives of H.E Amb Khadija Mohamed Makhzumi, is part of the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to environmental protection and sustainability. “The decision to outlaw plastic bags underscores our resolve to safeguard our environment for future generations,” said the Minister. “It is a necessary step towards a cleaner, plastic free future for Somalia.“
The Ministry urges all businesses and citizens to comply with the ban and encourages the use of environmentally friendly alternatives. Strict penalties will be enforced for non-compliance, as part of the government’s comprehensive strategy to reduce plastic waste and its detrimental effects on both urban and marine environments.
The move aligns with regional efforts and adheres to the standards set by the East African Community (EAC) on environmental protection. Somalia joins a growing number of nations taking firm action against the use of lightweight single-use plastic bags, which are known for their persistent environmental footprint and threat to marine life.
The Ministry will be working closely with all stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition away from plastic bags. Public awareness campaigns and educational programs will be rolled out to support this significant environmental policy change.
