The Belgian Navy’s naval base hosted on Wednesday the kickoff of the 2025 Multi-Partner Maritime Operation (MMO). This is a major operation conducted by several agencies aimed at ensuring maritime security in the North Sea.
The MMO is coordinated by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) and the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA). Belgium and France are partnering in this initiative, with the support of the European Union. Over the course of four months, Flemish and federal services will conduct joint operations with their French partners focusing on maritime security, environmental protection, border control, and sea rescue missions.
The operational framework allows participating partners to test innovative tools and methods for observation, communication, and intervention in a realistic environment.
“Various scenarios are simulated to examine how we can act more effectively in the North Sea. It is important that we collaborate and share our techniques and knowledge,” explained Frigate Captain Kurt De Winter, Director of the Belgian Navy’s Maritime Operations Center (COM). “For example, we simulate situations where multiple people end up in the water. This is a situation where French and Belgian services must work together closely.”
