Praia – The next ministerial meeting of the Atlantic African States Process (AASP) will take place in New York in September 2025, according to the final declaration adopted at the conclusion of the 5th AASP meeting, held Thursday in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde.
“The ministers have decided to hold their next ministerial meeting in New York in September 2025, on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly,” the final declaration states. It also notes that the meeting will focus on following up on the recommendations from the first Implementation Report.
Furthermore, the ministers of the Atlantic African States Process reaffirmed the commitment of member countries to continue implementing the Atlantic African Partnership and to strengthen dialogue aimed at promoting peace, stability, and shared prosperity across the region.
The AASP brings together African countries with Atlantic coastlines, with the objective of fostering regional cooperation and sustainable development. The initiative is structured around three main thematic pillars: political dialogue and security, the blue economy and maritime and energy connectivity, and sustainable development and the environment.
During the Praia meeting, discussions addressed critical issues for the shared future of the Atlantic States, further establishing the value of this platform as a mechanism for consultation and cooperation.
The creation of the AASP is the embodiment of the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who aspires to make the Atlantic African space a zone of peace, stability, and shared prosperity. The Praia meeting follows previous ministerial gatherings held in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
Since its inception, the Atlantic African States Process has made significant progress in strengthening its institutional and operational framework. Notable developments include the establishment of a Secretariat based in Rabat, the creation of three Thematic Groups, and the adoption of a Joint Action Program.
Within this momentum of collective engagement, the Praia meeting marks a decisive milestone in the implementation of shared strategies among Atlantic African States, consolidating their role in both regional and global ocean governance.
