The undersea cable ‘Ifriqya,’ spanning nearly 160 km and connecting Tunisia to Europe, has reached Bizerte.

This project is part of the effort to develop the national telecommunications infrastructure, prepare for the launch of 5G, and enhance internet services, stated Nizar Ben Néji, the Minister of Communication Technologies, during the kickoff of the cable installation works.

He highlighted that this is one of the largest investment projects, aligned with the implementation of the National Digital Strategy 2025.

The cable is expected to be operational by March 2024, connecting Tunisia to the rest of the world and improving its digital capabilities, according to the minister.

He added that this marks the fifth cable linking Asia to Africa and Europe, noting that three of them are owned by Tunisie Télécom, while the fourth belongs to Ooredoo and Orange.

Furthermore, the minister announced that the law regarding Tunisia’s accession to the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime will be submitted for review by the Assembly of the Representatives of the People on February 6th.
