Starting Thursday, May 15, 2025, container ships transiting the Suez Canal will benefit from a 15% reduction in transit fees.

This announcement was made on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, by the Presidency of the Egyptian Council of Ministers via its official Facebook page.

Egypt, a North African country, has taken this initiative in response to requests from numerous clients, particularly container ship owners and operators.

The measure aims to encourage shipping companies to continue using the Suez Canal while addressing industry demands and promoting mutual interests.

As part of the incentive package, a 15% discount on transit fees will be applied to container ships with a net tonnage of 130,000 tons or more, whether loaded or empty.

This reduction will be in effect for a 90-day period.

The announcement was made by Lieutenant General Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, during his meeting with Italian Ambassador to Cairo, Michele Quaroni, held Tuesday at the authority’s headquarters in Ismailia Governorate.

The two officials discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

At the beginning of the meeting, Lieutenant General Rabie reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to playing a key role in supporting global supply chains and facilitating trade between East and West.

He highlighted the importance of strengthening relationships with clients and partners within the international maritime community.

Furthermore, he emphasized that the Authority continuously strives to adapt to the fast-changing maritime transport industry and to address current challenges in the Red Sea region with flexibility, through ongoing and effective communication with all concerned stakeholders.
