The University of Lomé (UL) announced on Wednesday, November 6, the organization of the « 1st International Scientific Symposium on the Blue Economy, » in coordination with the National Agency for State Action at Sea (ONAEM). The central theme of the event will be: « Challenges, Issues, and Perspectives of the Blue Economy. »
As the birthplace of the « Pan-African Charter on Maritime Safety and Security » since October 15, 2016, Togo is working diligently to address the challenges and opportunities linked to the maritime economy in Africa.
This event, scheduled from November 19 to 21 in the Togolese capital, aims primarily to « reflect on the impact of research on training for sustainable blue economy development in Africa, » as emphasized by the organizers.
Since the African Union adopted its Pan-African Charter on Maritime Economy in Togo, this will be the first time the Togolese government gathers researchers, experts, and local practitioners of the blue economy for a major scientific event. The central theme of this conference will be explored through various subtopics, including:
The Togolese government justifies the importance of this conference by emphasizing the strategic opportunity that the blue economy represents for the economic, social, and environmental development of African states. Togo is one of 38 coastal countries in Africa, with a coastline spanning 50 km.
The conference will explore subtopics such as « Ocean Governance and Blue Growth, » « Adaptation to Climate Change, » and « Blue Economy and Law, » among others.
