The Maritime Week Africa 2025, which saw participation from leading professionals in the marine fuels sector, including marine fuel buyers and suppliers, port authorities, and regulators, kicked off on Wednesday, March 26, at the Hilton Mauritius Resort and Spa in Flic-en-Flac. This conference provides a platform to address urgent challenges and emerging opportunities in the marine fuels sector in Africa, both regionally and internationally.
The event’s opening ceremony was attended by Arvin Boolell, Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy, and Fisheries; Nancy Karigithu, Special Envoy and Advisor for the Maritime Sector and Blue Economy at the Office of the President of Kenya; Llewellyn Bankes-Hughes, CEO of ship.energy; Aruna Bunwaree Ramsaha, Acting Director General of the Mauritius Ports Authority (MPA); and other key stakeholders in the sector.
Arvin Boolell emphasized that Maritime Week Africa 2025 represents a pivotal moment for Africa’s marine fuel industry, offering a unique opportunity to embrace change, strategically plan for the future, and shape the region’s maritime landscape. He stressed that as a small island developing state, Mauritius must fully harness the potential of the blue economy, which he described as the new frontier for Africa’s economic growth.
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to making Mauritius the preferred bunkering hub in the region and to implementing legislative reforms to propel the ocean economy by exploring untapped opportunities in fishing, trade, and maritime services. Regarding the evolving geopolitical situation, the Minister urged African nations to collaborate and adopt innovative strategies to ensure a fair and just maritime sector.
