Following a high-level meeting with the USA on security partnership, Tunisia has announced a significant expansion in its maritime defense capabilities. The two countries have finalized an agreement for the delivery of 65-foot SAFE Archangel boats and $110 million in logistical support (335.5 million dinars).
This agreement builds on a previous deal valued at $49.3 million, which included the delivery of similar boats, global positioning systems, navigation and communication equipment, as well as training and logistical support. The new agreement extends beyond the initial one, highlighting the strength of the cooperation between the two nations to enhance Tunisia’s military capabilities, given its status as a NATO non-member ally.
The SAFE Archangel boats are designed for maritime operations, including search and rescue missions, improved enforcement of maritime law, and monitoring and securing Tunisian waters. These vessels will be crucial in combating various forms of illicit trafficking in the Mediterranean (such as drugs, human trafficking, and illegal immigration) and addressing terrorism.
The key player in this partnership is SAFE Boats International, based in Bremerton, Washington. According to GlobalData, the U.S. Navy acquired the Mark VI patrol boat from SAFE Boats International between 2013 and 2018.
