Deputy Thamer Mazhoud declared that the government must find a radical solution to immediately stop the discharge of phosphogypsum into the sea, in order to put an end to the severe damage caused by this substance to the marine resources of the Gulf of Gabes.
Mazhoud emphasized the government’s role in quickly ending air pollution caused by the industrial units of the Tunisian Chemical Complex, stating that « the toxic gases emitted by these units have led to the spread of numerous serious diseases and have also harmed the nearby oases. » He pointed out the availability of technology capable of treating industrial pollution, which can be addressed when there is a serious will to do so.
He criticized the Tunisian Chemical Group for evading its responsibility toward the region, saying that this institution « has done nothing from the package of measures it announced after the revolution to remedy the environmental situation in the region and has continued polluting the environment. » He added that « the few projects that have been launched have been suspended for years. »
Mazhoud called on the government to resolve the pollution problem in Gabes without delay, according to a precise timetable and clear vision, stressing the need to protect the region from the environmental and industrial dangers posed by the Tunisian Chemical Complex due to the outdated nature of its industrial units. In this context, he recalled the suffocation incidents that occurred last year affecting students in Chott El Salam and Ghannouch, caused by gases emitted by the complex’s factories.
The deputy highlighted the need for the state to fully assume responsibility for the environmental file and compensate the region for the damages caused by the installation of the Tunisian Chemical Complex at its current location. He emphasized that the governorate of Gabes can no longer bear further options or projects that could cause additional environmental harm.
