A blockchain-based technological platform designed to strengthen the traceability of fisheries products is currently being tested in Bizerte.

Initial trials are being carried out with fishers from the region, according to Habib Mathlouthi, an official at the Interprofessional Group for Fisheries Products.

The various institutions involved (the municipality, the Agency for Ports and Fishing Facilities, the Directorate-General for Fisheries, and veterinary services) are expected to validate the project in 2026.

Prior certification will be required before operational launch and any potential rollout, he specified.

Part of the Tunisian–Italian cooperation program led by the Interprofessional Group for Fisheries Products (GIPP), the platform documents every stage of fishing activity, from catch to sale, including processing operations. The recorded data cover the fishing area, fishing method, date, vessel, or producer. Dedicated accounts will be created for fishers to verify compliance with standards and to authorize—or deny—commercialization.

Wider adoption of the system would provide consumers with greater assurance that regulations are being respected, particularly those related to biological rest periods, thereby contributing to resource conservation. The platform would also reduce reliance on intermediaries, improving sector transparency and fishers’ incomes.

An online marketplace, accessible via web and mobile, will later be integrated into the system, enabling fishers to sell their products without multiplying intermediaries.
