The Japanese Ambassador to Tunisia paid a visit today, Wednesday, August 7, 2024, to the Sfax seawater desalination plant, which has entered its final experimental phase.
In a statement to the media, Mohamed Zahraa, the central director of the seawater desalination project in Sfax, confirmed that the first unit of the plant has been operational since July 22, 2024, and the second unit has been in operation since August 1.
Zahraa stated that the plant is currently pumping 50,000 cubic meters of desalinated water and that this station will help reduce the water deficit in the region, noting that the third and fourth units will be ready by mid-September.
The Japanese Ambassador to Tunisia mentioned that the progress of the Sfax seawater desalination plant is significant, thanks to the efforts of the National Water Distribution Utility (SONEDE) and its partners, noting that the work on the plant had been halted for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but has accelerated since 2022 to begin operations this summer.
The Japanese Ambassador concluded his statement to the media by highlighting that this plant is expected to provide 100,000 cubic meters of desalinated water to approximately 900,000 residents of Sfax in the future.
